Curiosity
The teacher of Intention
Curiosity was born on the family ranch in Manitoba nearly 27 years ago! She has been a loyal partner to Joice for many years, taking part in liberty work, trail rides and cattle work, while also giving countless kids their first ride and many people their first experience meeting a horse. She carries a lifetime of wisdom and has earned the title “Queen of Intention” — she has a way of making you get very clear about what you want and mean it.
Despite her age, Curiosity is in good health. She has some arthritis but light exercise has proven to be helpful. Being a teacher in the equine programs have given her an amazing purpose in her retirement, and she continues to be a very special part of the herd.
Poncho
The Teacher of Self-Esteem
Poncho is a 9-year-old miniature horse who came to us from a nearby home in Siksika Nation. He was originally intended to be a racing pony, but when it turned out he was just a little too slow for racing, he needed a new home. It quickly became clear that he was a perfect fit, because Poncho absolutely loves people!
Poncho may be the smallest member of the herd, but he certainly doesn’t act like it. He has no problem chasing a full-sized horse — or even a cow — away from his food! Poncho teaches us that confidence doesn't come from how big you are. If you're having a tough day, Poncho is always ready to put a smile on your face and remind you to stand tall, believe in yourself and be unapologetically you.
Ruby
The teacher of Trust & Resilience
Ruby is 18 year old Quarter Horse, and had spent many years raising foals before coming to the Equine Programs. When she arrived, she was very unsure of people and was in need of some nutrition and care. With patience, consistency and lots of care, Ruby gradually learned to trust again. She also gave birth to one last healthy foal last year- Archie. Ruby is an excellent Mama.
Today, she is incredibly gentle, patient and eager to learn. Instead of keeping her distance, she now comes to greet us and enjoys spending time with people. Ruby reminds us that trust takes time, resilience is a strength, and sometimes a little patience and kindness can make a world of difference.
Kira
Teacher of Awareness
Kira is a 19-year-old Connemara Pony/Saddlebred cross who spent her younger years as a jumping horse before a leg injury ended her competition career. She came to us through a generous donation from a loving owner who wanted to give Kira a happy semi-retirement while knowing she would continue to receive the care and attention she deserves.
Kira can be a little standoffish at first and is incredibly sensitive to body language and energy. She may act like she has no interest in being near you, but give her a little time and she might suddenly be nuzzling you — or practically standing in your pocket! Kira teaches us to slow down, pay attention, respect boundaries and let connection happen naturally.
Archie
The Youngest Member of the Team
Archie is a one-year-old Quarter Horse/Thoroughbred colt, born right here on the farm to wise mama Ruby. He has a great sense of humor and loves keeping the older horses young! Archie loves meeting new people and is doing wonderfully with his training.
He’s not a teacher just yet — he has a few things to learn first! But he is showing lots of potential and may become one of the future teachers once he has a little more experience under his belt. For now, he’s happy being the youngster, making friends and keeping everyone entertained.
Joice
Founder & Facilitator
Joice grew up with horses. Her mom taught her to handle, ride, raise and train horses, and together they learned natural horsemanship methods. Horses have helped Joice through some very difficult times, inspiring her to become certified in Equine Assisted Learning in 2024 so she could share that experience with others.
Today, Joice facilitates the programs while caring for the horses’ daily needs, including their diet, hoof care, training and basic health care. The welfare of her horses is incredibly important to her, and she strives to give them the best life possible.
Joice speaks some Spanish and some of the Blackfoot language, and was given a Blackfoot name, “Spiitaaki”, meaning “Tall Woman.”
Mauricio
Farm & Facility Support
Originally from Ecuador, Mauricio has always had a love for animals. In recent years, he has had the opportunity to learn more about horses and has developed excellent skills in handling and working with them.
Mauricio does a little bit of everything to keep the farm and facility running smoothly — from fencing and property maintenance to caring for equipment, the tractor and everything else that comes with farm life. These programs would not be possible without the support from Mauricio, as he is an excellent problem solver and inventor as needed to get things accomplished.
He speaks fluent Spanish and English, as well as some of the Blackfoot language. His given Blackfoot name, Spaiikone, means “Spanish man.”
Wyatt
Farm & Facility Team
Wyatt is a huge help behind the scenes at Something Natural Equine. While keeping busy with online school, he works hard around the farm and facility, helping with horse care and all the jobs that keep the property looking and running its best. From trimming grass and removing weeds to raking the outdoor arena and helping with general maintenance, Wyatt is always willing to pitch in and get the job done.
Wyatt’s hard work and good ideas are an important part of keeping everything running smoothly.
